Albert Winter
Could someone please give me a detailed description on how to drag and drop files from one pc to another one? I use 2 computers with Windows 10 x64. Mouse and keyboard control work fine with synergy ver 1.7.5 (as it already did with version 1.5). File transfer neither works with copy and paste (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V) nor with drag and drop.
Adam Foisey
Last I heard it was a fairly new feature (as of early December). I have been able to use it intermittently, currently it is not working. I'm more than happy to help test and provide feedback if needed.
Daveq Bird
I purchased because of this feature. I cant get it to work either. Is Synergy going to fix this?

Ming Shieh
I have the same issue. Using 1.7.5. I am able to copy / paste url link, images copied onto clipboard. Can't seem to drag files between by windws 7 server and Mac OSX 10.11 macbook. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
AA de Boer
I really hope this can be resolved quickly. Drag & Drop file support was one of the reasons I decided to get the pro version. At least remove this feature as being present from the front page website if it does not work.
Greg Munn
I'd like to echo the sentiments, I thought this feature was working when I purchased the app, now I'm beginning to wonder if I should have looked around a bit more.

karl wiggisser
I have the follwing setup: server win8.1, client macosx 10.11. D&d of files is working from win -> mac most of the time but not 100% reproducible. Seems to be a matter of how fast you move your mouse and where the windows taskbar is located. Case 1: Taskbar on the left side of the screen, client on the left side, so I have to drag over the taskbar. If I move the mouse slowly to the edge of my screen, I see a flickering of the synergy symbol on the taskbar and d&d then works. If I move my mouse quite fast, d&d doesn't work most of the time. It also doesn't work, when I drag over an app icon on the taskbar. Case 2: Taskbar is on bottom, client on the left side. This seems to work much better. I can move my mouse very fast, and most of the time, d&d works as expected. I was not able to do a d&d of files in the opposite direction, ie. from mac client to windows server. Gary Stevens
My Drag and Drop works, but there is absolutely no visual feedback. When the cursor goes to the other screen and you let go, it looks just like a normal pointer the whole time, but the file is somewhere on the desktop (not where I dropped it, but there nevertheless). It will not drag and drop folders though.
the-wes
Here are a few general notes about File Drag and Drop. In the old days, you had to be logged in to Synergy Premium in order to enable Drag and Drop. In 1.6.2, we removed this requirement and now Drag and Drop is enabled by default. You should get a log message that "Drag and Drop is enabled" or similar. If you have that message, you should be able to drag a file's icon right off the edge of the screen, and it should appear on the desktop of the other computer a few seconds later. Try refreshing the desktop of the other system to see if that causes the file icon to appear. I heard from a few users who stated that rebooting got file drag & drop to start working. Try a simple test to help narrow down where the problem is. A plain text file named something like "text.txt" and containing only a few letters. If that works, then work your way up from there until you find something that doesn't work. If you go through this process, please report to us what does and doesn't work so we can work on it. Drag and Drop is still a fairly new feature. Some bugs are being worked out. If the above still doesn't work, please increase your logging level to Debug2 and then send us some log output from the moment you try to drag a file across screens. Some final notes: File Drag & Drop is only currently available on Windows (Vista and newer) and Mac (OSX 10.7 and newer). Also, only single files are supported: no folders, no groups of files. And, if your file's icon travels over another icon or window on the way to the edge of the screen, this can break the drag & drop feature. -wes
Andras Bukki-Deme
Hello! I just would like to share how I figured out my Synergy drag&drop can work properly. First, do not drag from TotalCommander or other 3rd party app, drag the file from your desktop or from Windows Explorer window. Second, it took me like 30 minutes until I figured out why this file copy feature did not work for me (copy simple text to clipboard was ok from the beginning). The trick was in my monitor configuration. It seems, I can only drop the file after dragging if I do the dropping action (releasing the mouse button) on the Client (or server) monitor which has the default Windows taskbar. My configuration exists of 2 laptops, both with an extra monitor, and using extended desktops. So when I dragged a file from the Server to the client's secondary monitor (no taskbar at the bottom), this feature did not work. Solution: just pull the file further, and drop it on that screen which is set as primary. I hope with this info I will save time for others... I'm running Win 7 Pro to a Mac 10.11.4 Please advise - I also purchased this because of the "drag and drop" feature.
the-wes
would you please click Apply on your Synergy window, and copy / paste the log lines that appear after? for example, mine look like this: [2016-04-13T09:18:36] INFO: starting new process [2016-04-13T09:18:36] INFO: activeDesktop:Winlogon [2016-04-13T09:18:36] INFO: starting new process [2016-04-13T09:18:36] INFO: drag and drop enabled [2016-04-13T09:18:36] ERROR: failed to get desktop path, no drop target available, error=2 [2016-04-13T09:18:36] NOTE: started server, waiting for clients [2016-04-13T09:18:36] INFO: watchdog status: ok
Jon Coign
I'm having the same issue. Server is running on Windows Server 2012 R2 and Client is running on Windows 10. When server starts (click apply) I see the info message "[2016-04-21T10:39:56] INFO: drag and drop enabled". When I drag a file to the client I see the following Error message on the client "[2016-04-21T10:37:23] ERROR: drop file failed: drop target is empty". As an aside I can copy and paste text between the machines, but should I also be able to copy and paste files? I see the Info messages (below) that the clipboard is updated when I copy text or a file, but I can never paste anything but plain text. the-wes
Jon - you should not be able to copy and paste files, that is not a feature offered by Synergy. You can drag a file's icon to the edge of the screen and Synergy will copy it to the other system for you. After your last restart, I noticed you did not get the "drop target is empty" message - did you test the file copy again after that?
Jon Coign
Sorry I guess I misunderstood since we can copy or paste with text that the clipboard would work like normal across the screens. That said text based copy and paste doesn't work consistently. Once or twice a day it just stops however clicking Apply on the configuration dialog with no other changes resolves it after the client reconnects. As for the drag and drop file copy I don't remember exactly what I did for that previous log. I was waiting for a notification from the forum that there was a response so I just got this when I logged into check. Apparently I didn't check the notify box. I just retested it based on your comment and I don't see any messages when I drag a file to the edge of the screen about copying the file. All I see is the following with the enter leave and switch messages. [2016-05-20T09:35:31] INFO: entering screen [2016-05-20T09:35:36] INFO: switch from "MONSTER" to "XPS15" at 2559,349 [2016-05-20T09:35:36] INFO: leaving screen [2016-05-20T09:35:38] INFO: switch from "XPS15" to "MONSTER" at 2,689 [2016-05-20T09:35:38] INFO: entering screen Am I doing this correctly. Steps I took were left click and hold on a file, drag to edge of monitor that is shared with the second computer still holding left click, slowly move across screen boundaries. I've tried this normal speed and slow enough that it's pretty much pixel by pixel as it cross to the next screen. It doesn't appear to detect that I am dragging a file icon from one desktop to the other. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jon
the-wes
Hmm... would you please also send over the same log segment from the client side? The one between clicking Apply and it connecting to the server. The log doesn't show anything in the client or server other than entering, leaving and switch messages most of the time regardless of success or failure. Once I got an error on the client [2016-05-20T13:12:17] ERROR: drop file failed: drop target is empty but the next drag worked. I would say 40 - 50% silently fail even now that it's working sometimes. It seems to fail more often if the mouse is moved rapidly across the screen boundary. I'm having the most consistent results dragging the file near the boundary hovering for a few hundred ms (estimate) and the slowly crossing the screen boundary. No idea why clicking apply again on the client changed it. Apply on the server numerous times in the past made no difference. Do you have any insight on why this got it to start working? Anything repeatable on sequencing of clicking apply on client and server, settings, or dragging speed / path that improves reliability would be appreciated. I am happy dealing with some quirks in this version if there is a repeatable set of happy path steps that work reliably. Thanks, Jon
kolorafa
The first thing i did check after i bought & installed was drag and drop... Sadly .. i mainly use Linux so the functionality just isn't there It would be nice to have it, but no pressure But you should write somewhere that drag&drop is not supported by linux, that would save me some time trying to figure out why it's not working, maybe some checkbox or bug... the-wes
Jon - I'm really glad it started working at least a little. One thing I have found is that if the mouse cursor travels across any other objects (file icons, application windows, etc) on its way to the screen edge, this interferes with the copy and it will fail. Also, there seems to be an issue with Synergy detecting the path to the user's desktop. This is what I was looking for when I asked for the logs. It seems to fail much more often when Synergy is starting up after a fresh reboot. Maybe something about still being in the bootup process causes that function to fail? I don't know. I will try to narrow it down further when I get a chance.
