Synergy1 with ubuntu 18.10

Hey guys,
Having an issue getting synergy started before login on ubuntu 18.10. I know what commands to run for both the client and the server, I just need to know where to put them. From what I understand 18.10 doesnt use lightdm. It uses gdm so I followed the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynergyHowto for the correct situation and it did not work. Currently I have my client autologging in so I can start the synergy client using the "Startup Applications" program found included in ubuntu. The server doesn't need to start before login but it would be nice.
