Why does Synergy 2 require root privileges?

Using the included systemd service file, the synergy server thing runs as root, and crashes when it's run as a user service. Shouldn't it be run as the local user, or at the very least, it's own system user with limited privileges?

My guess is that you'd need either root access or a dedicated kernel module "bridge" in order to reliably emulate the input into the client system or capture the input from the server system.
