MacOS: longpress letters don't show special chars on client

I have a Macbook Pro as client, iMac as client. Usually on macos if you press and hold a character, e.g. press e for a second or two, a menu pops up and you can chose from a list of accented chars.

Unfortunately on the client this simply types eeeeeeeee or aaaaaaaaa. 

Has anyone found a config or workaround for this?
