Client behaves as if control is held down

After tinkering with a fresh install for a while and everything appearing to work well, suddenly my client machine behaves as if the control key is held down. If I try to type something in Firefox, commands happen. Interestingly, the same thing happens even if I use the keyboard actually connected to that machine. 

Server: Mac

Client: Ubuntu

@Hans Persson. Have you tried stopping Synergy and using the keyboard connected to that client machine?

Yes, and that made no difference. I have now rebooted the client machine (which solved the problem), so I can't unfortunately make any further tests.
