I found the issue the msvcr140.dll missing and need to install Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 then Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable Update 3 and restart. Run the .mis installer and it should complete. At this point make sure the Synergy 2 APP is running in Administrator under the Compatibility tab on the Windows 7 system. On the Prime system shut down Synergy 2 APP disable the Windows Firewall completely go in to the services.msc and restart the Synergy 2 service then start the Synergy 2 APP. Re-enable the Windows Firewall and you should be good

I get somewhat frequent disconnects when I close my laptop and walk to a meeting with it. Both of my devices are macs. To reconnect the magic dance I do that seems to be working (might be overkill) adds on to @Fun Bobby's commands above: killall -v -m synergy; launchctl kickstart -k -p gui/`id -u`/com.symless.synergy.v2.synergyd; open /Applications/Synergy.app Note the above command uses back quotes "`" to grab the output of id -u so you don't need to copy it around.

Did you try: use a little software that emulates the apple keys (like macomfort or else) - the result for me was: i can use any keyboard for both machines (mac & win)

Same experience for me. After installing on my desktop and laptop, I could see both machines in the app but I couldn't get it to work until I manually added the following rules to the windows firewall %ProgramFiles%\Synergy\synergys.exe%ProgramFiles%\Synergy\synergyd.exe%ProgramFiles%\Synergy\synergyc.exe%ProgramFiles%\Synergy\synergy2.exe

Same thing on 1.8.8 on Mac OS X ...

Apparently this is still an issue on Ubuntu 16.04.
