1.8.4 on OS X 10.10 won't let me set client screen name

Just downloaded 1.8.4 stable build when prompted by existing 1.8.3 client and the client no longer works. It assumes that my Mac's computer name has to be the screen name instead of letting me override it with something else. I don't use my Mac's computer name because it is longer and unstable (often times OS X gets confused and decides to call it 'Foo (2).local' instead of 'Foo.local', etc.). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to download 1.8.3 to get back to something that works.
