Connecting to Server through work VPN which allows port 22

Hi, I am trying to setup my work pc as synergy server. I can only access this computer from my personal laptop (this is the synergy client) when I am connected to the work network through VPN. And the work pc (synergy server) only has port 22 opened (I can ssh/sftp etc). I saw a few tutorials online using ssh for port forwarding (ssh -p 22 -L 24800:localhost:24800 user@work_pc_ip) but that did not work for me. I have Linux installed in both systems (red hat 6.7 in server and Arch-linux in client. Client also has windows 7 installed if someone knows how to connect from VPN from windows to linux server) Did anyone succeed in setting up a similar setup ? Thanks in advance. Regards.
