Failover / High-availability Primary Host

In an environment where the computer that hosts the main keyboard and mouse is a portable device, I think it would be ideal to have a service in the background on each of the devices that perhaps pings the main host, and when it detects it isn't present after x amount of time, programs another pre-specified host to become the main one until it see it come back online. This make sense in a system where a laptop or system that isn't always on or present is used as the primary host.
