Daniel Lewis Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Hello, I keep getting this error when using the latest client/server software between Windows Server and Linux Mint Client,
NOTE: client "<name>" is dead
I get this even when I'm actively using the connection, it just randomly disconnects with this error... What is going on?
Daniel Lewis Posted June 17, 2015 Author Posted June 17, 2015 Bump, I can't be the only one experiencing this. Any help?
Ben Koenig Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Hi, I haven't seen this, but it sounds like something may be misconfigured (either synergy or the OS). Are you by any chance connecting over a wireless network?
Daniel Lewis Posted June 18, 2015 Author Posted June 18, 2015 Hi, Well I was on Wifi when I first noticed it but now I'm getting it even on Ethernet. The server and the client are both on Ethernet and they're both connected to the same switch. I also thought that it may be a configuration issue so I reinstalled on both machines, still get this issue...
Gareth Jones Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Just so you don't feel alone - i see the same exact thing. I am using wired connections. Main box is windows 7 - client is red hat. If I stop / start the linux client - it will stay connected again for a random amount of time.
Gareth Jones Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Bit more info. I have installed nightly build # 673fba5 on both linux and windows 7 64 bit. It still happens. can stop and start the client on linux and it will easily restart - but - still happens.
Gareth Jones Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Oh - and - I have disabled ssl - wouldnt work for me.
the-wes Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 The "client [name] is dead" message results when the Synergy server asks the client "are you still there?" and doesn't get a response. This could indicate the client has hung, but not crashed to the point of closing out the TCP connection. Does the client's log indicate any issue when this happens?
Mark Acosta Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 This sounds like the same thing I'm seeing. I'm running synergy 1.7.3 (ssl disabled) with a windows 8.1 server and a fedora 22 linux client. The client will disconnect randomly for no good reason. The client is still running but just stops communicating with the server. Restarting the client gets things running again. I have a mouse connected to the client and if I turn it on and move the mouse around a bit, sometimes that's enough to get the server and client talking again. It usually doesn't work but occasionally it does. I have the client writing to a log file and the only error in it is "ERROR: dup error: 2" which I think happens when synergyc start up. Also, I don't think I started seeing this problem until I updated the client to fedora 22.
Gareth Jones Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 There is nothing in the log. I have it set to Debug. The log does not exist - it is the default /var/log/synergy.log
the-wes Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Gareth - Synergy runs as the currently logged-in user, which often does not have permission to write to /var/log. Please change the log file path to some place you have permission to write to. Also, you don't have to use the log file. If you keep Synergy open, you should see the Log output area in there.
Gareth Jones Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Yup - that was it. No permissions. Moved it to my home directory - now I will have logs...
Gareth Jones Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Just upgraded to stable-a1106b0. Same thing is happening. There is nothing in the client log. The server log just says - client "fred" is dead.
the-wes Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Hmm, I haven't seen it crash silently like that before. When you say "There is nothing in the client log" - do you mean it's literally empty? Or just nothing related to the crash? Have you tried turning up the logging level? In the same spot where you set the path to the log file, there is a drop-down prompt where you can specify how much info you want included in the logs. Debug should be sufficient.
Gareth Jones Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I saw "client is dead" on the server. In the client log - there was the usual - leaving screen, copying clipboard etc - but no messages about the time when it died. I've changed to debug level - will post when it happens again
the-wes Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Right, I understand that the "client is dead" was displayed on the server. My question is intended to find out what the client thinks is happening at the time the server stops getting a response from the client. Sounds like it it might be frozen. Looking forward to the debug logs.

Gareth Jones Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 ok - this happened right away again. The client is a new laptop running linux redhat enterprise. it doesn't (often) stutter - lots of cpu/ram The server is an older windows 7 box - it does stutter. Has lots of ram - 8gb - and a quad core processor - but an older one. the-wes Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Odd... it seems to be consistently crashing during clipboard interactions. I see there are some bugs open regarding this. Maybe try the latest nightly build and see if it still happens? http://synergy-project.org/nightly?filter=6109a18 -wes
Gareth Jones Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Downloaded and installed synergy-v1.7.4-stable-4dd4045-Windows-x64 and synergy-v1.7.4-stable-4dd4045-Linux-x86_64 Still happens - albeit maybe not as often.
Gareth Jones Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Installed synergy-v1.7.4-rc8-c734bab-Linux-x86_64 and synergy-v1.7.4-rc8-c734bab-Windows-x64. Still don't have ssl working - I'm good with that. Don't get the "client is dead" message any more - but it still stops. Cut and paste works from windows 7 to linux - but not the other way, Client crashed again - just no client is dead in the logs. Used to be i could go for a week or so without the system crashing or losing its ability to cut and paste. Now - not so much... On the birght side - we now get new releases on a far more consistent pace. Even if they don't particularly help...
the-wes Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Gareth - Do you get any messages when your client crashes?
Gareth Jones Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Not so much. I will post the messages from the logs when it happens again. A simple stop/start on the linux client gets it going again.
Alan Price Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Just want to add that I am also experiencing the same issue with the same log results. My set up is an Ubuntu server, with MAC client. I have seen this since 1.7.3, and as I have time try the latest nightly build but revert to 1.7.1 so that I can continue working. Issue exists with ssl on and off. I will post logs the next opportunity that I have to install a nightly.
Gareth Jones Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Lied - am still getting client dead..
